    • Kochi is one of the most popular tourist destinations for both local and international travellers to India.
    • The city derives its name from the Malayalam word Kochazhi meaning small lagoon.
    • Located in the region of Fort Kochi, St. Francis Church was built by the Portuguese in the year 1903 and is the oldest European church in India.
    • Introduced in Kochi several centuries ago by Chinese traders, Kochi’s Chinese Fishing Nets are major attractions for photographers.
    • Kochi is the only city in Kerala with three railway stations. The busy Ernakulam Junction Railway Station receives over 28,000 passengers every day.
    • Located in the region of Fort Kochi, the Vasco House is said to be one of the oldest Portuguese houses in the country.
    • Kochi has been described as the Queen of the Arabian Sea for centuries. The Italian traveller Nicolas Conti of yore mentioned in his travelogue – “If China is where you make your money, then Kochi is surely the place to spend it.”
    • Kochi is home to the Vembanad Lake, the longest lake in India. With a length of 97 km, the lake is spread over 2033 sq km.

    Kochi has a tropical monsoon climate, with no harsh extremes. Ground temperatures are usually between 20 to 35 degrees Centigrade.

    Between June and September, the city is blessed with abundant and heavy showers due to the South-West monsoon winds. The North-West monsoons brings lighter showers from October to December. December to March is the dry season.

    Kochi is in the path of tropical cyclones, which can occur between April and December.

    Bus

    Buses are among the most inexpensive means of transportation in Kochi. The city and its suburbs are well-connected through an excellent network of buses (both government-run and private) that not only link all parts of the city, but also connect Kochi to other parts of the state.

    Metro

    The Kochi Metro was inaugurated in June 2017, and is India’s first multimodal system, with a soon to be launched water metro system that will connect the city with its ten islands. Students can avail of a monthly or weekly Metro pass that allows them to travel multiple times within the same period.

    Taxi

    Car/taxi rental agencies in Kochi are aplenty, and you easily can hire a cab to get around the city. Fares are fixed in advance, and some cabs will run on meters that are calibrated to show charges per kilometre.

    Auto-rickshaw

    The quickest and most convenient means of transportation in Kochi are autorickshaws. Autos are easily available from almost any point in the city, with auto stands that are well distributed across all localities. Pre-paid auto stands are available at railway stations and bus stands.

    Ferry

    Ferries are a fun way of transportation in Kochi, and the city has a system of well-connected inter-island ferries. A popular and well-frequented ferry service is the Ro-Ro (Roll on-Roll off) ferry service between Fort Kochi and Vypin islands.

    Cycle

    Many parts of Kochi, especially the Fort Kochi area which has dedicated tracks for cyclists, can be explored on bicycle. Bicycles are available on rent and can be hired by the day.

    Kerala is the most literate state in India, and Kochi has a very well-established education system. There are a good many schools, colleges and other higher education facilities here, offering education that is on par with the best in the country.
